Interview with producer, mix engineer and musician Rob Chiarelli by Natasha Benjamin
“Success is peace of mind which is a direct result of self-‐satisfaction in knowing you made the effort to become the best you are capable of becoming” – John Wooden
Rob Chiarelli is an American record producer, musician and mix engineer who has greatly influenced the music industry over the years. With his longevity in the music industry, he was not afraid to tell Creative Spotlights his continued journey to success and how remaining humble made the journey a little easier.
Rob fell in love with music at the ripe age of 10 years old and by the time he reached junior high school he knew he wanted to be in the music business. He attended the University of Miami and studied jazz and created a band with his collegiate peers. After his college band was dissolved, he moved into the production realm of music.
In 1989, Rob decided to make a drastic move to Los Angeles and this move sparked his continued journey. His mixes and productions were inspired by life experiences, being open to new and fresh ideas, and his God-‐given talent to impact others through music. Rob worked with Teddy Pendergrass, Ray Charles, Will Smith, Mary Mary, Kirk Franklin, and more. Rob was not afraid to credit such artists as to why he was so successful. “ There were 6 or 7 records that won Grammys, but I have to give credit to the artist. They won that Grammy, not me”.
As a “seasoned” record producer, Rob left aspiring producers and musicians some inspirational advice: “Be a student of the arts, pursue excellence and stay humble”. Rob also made sure that if he could tell his younger self anything, it would be “don’t take yourself too seriously and enjoy the journey”. Over the years, Rob spent 16 or more hours a day in the studio and sacrificed a lot. As you pursue excellence remember to enjoy the journey of life because that will teach you the most invaluable lessons.
